The Finance Department with the City of Chilliwack, a growing and vibrant community of 100,000 located 100 kilometers east of Vancouver, is seeking a dynamic individual to fill the casual position of Payroll Specialist.

In this role in Finance, you will assist management to achieve an efficient operation in the Finance Department through reliable performance in payroll and clerical functions as assigned, observing and complying with municipal policies, and statutory requirements ensuring the safety and security of confidential material/matters pertaining to the Department's operation.
Reporting to the Payroll Administrator, the Payroll Specialist will coordinate the effective and efficient administration of the City’s complex bi-weekly payroll in compliance with collective agreements, policies, and statutory requirements. The position is responsible for coordinating the accurate preparation, calculation, and completion of payroll for all municipal employees in a unionized environment. Work involves coordinating and participating in activities to ensure the production of an accurate biweekly payroll; preparing, updating, and maintaining the computerized payroll system, maintain and update the master database for individual employees, balance and reconcile payroll accounts including preparation of journal entries, perform year-end payroll processing and reporting. |

Educational Requirements: |
•Must have grade 12 education supplemented by completion of a 2 year recognized accounting program.
• Completion of Certified Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) Certification. |

Skill Requirements: |
•Minimum 2 years progressive payroll experience including working experience with highly complex collective agreements.
• Knowledge of Unit 4 payroll software would be considered an asset.
• Ability to understand and interpret applicable laws, rules, regulations, and legislation.
• Working knowledge of pension plans
• Ability to perform and succeed under the pressure of deadlines
• Ability to maintain the confidentiality of sensitive information
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Good knowledge of the functions, practices and procedures, bylaws, policies and regulations pertaining to the operation of the Finance Department;
• Good knowledge of modern office practices and municipal accounting procedures and operations;
• Able to perform tasks with minimal supervision;
• Able to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with department officials and other members of the staff; |

Additional Information: |
The incumbent in this class will normally work the standard work week of Monday to Friday within the hours specified and on occasion work overtime as authorized. The incumbent, upon hiring, will have union dues deducted from source in accordance with the Collective Agreement. |
