Job Overview
The Township of Langley is currently recruiting for up to five regular part-time Recreation Worker IV - Lifeguard/Instructors to join our team of professionals in the Recreation, Arts and Culture Division, Recreation Programs and Services Department. Reporting to the Community Recreation Manager, in this unionized position you will be responsible for providing lifeguarding functions as well as instructional duties for a variety of aquatic programs.
Responsibilities
• Perform lifeguarding duties, ensuring the safety of patrons utilizing the aquatic facility and supervising the use of the swimming and related recreation areas
• Perform custodial and janitorial duties relative to the aquatic facility
• Perform scheduled maintenance tasks with respect to pool water, facilities, and equipment such as filters, chlorinators and related water treatment equipment
• Conduct instructional and recreational aquatic programs for all age ranges and for a variety of community groups with special needs
• Perform related work as required
Qualifications
• Completion of Grade 10, preferably completion of Grade 12 and Pool Operator’s and/or Lifesaving Society Instructor courses, or an equivalent combination of training and experience
• Sound knowledge of the theory and practice of lifesaving, CPR and first aid
• Working knowledge of teaching methods and group leadership techniques emphasizing instruction in water safety and aquatic skills
• Working knowledge of pool chemistry, of water filtration, chlorination, heating and related pool equipment and procedures
• Ability to display sound aquatic skills and to instruct in these skills at standards set by relevant authorities
• A minimum of two years lifeguarding with previous supervisory experience is preferred
• Occupational First Aid is considered an asset
This position is defined by the Township of Langley as a position of trust and requires a Police Information Check (not required as part of the application process, however, will be required upon consideration for employment).
There are five positions with the following work hour patterns.
Position #1 – Shift Pattern (27 hours per week) - hours of work are Sunday 2:15pm 9:15pm, Monday 8:30am-4:30pm, Wednesday 5:45am-12:45pm, Friday 12:00-7:00pm; Non-standard hours and/or non-standard work week
Position #2 Shift Pattern (27 hours per week) - hours of work are Sunday 2:15pm – 9:15pm, Monday 8:30am - 4:30pm, Tuesday 5:45am-12:45pm, Friday 12:00pm - 7:00pm; Non-standard hours and/or non-standard work week
Position #3 Shift Pattern (22.25 hours per week) - hours of work are Saturday 5:30pm - 9:15pm, Sunday 1:30pm - 9:30pm, Monday 3:00pm - 10:30pm, Friday 5:30pm – 9:30pm; Non-standard and/or non-standard work week
Position #4 Shift Pattern (22.75 hours per week) - hours of work are Sunday 5:45am – 12pm, Monday 5:30am – 11:30am, Tuesday and Wednesday 3:30pm – 9:00pm; Non-standard and/or non-standard work week
Position #5 Shift Pattern (21.50 hours per week) - hours of work are Saturday 5:45am – 12:00pm, Wednesday 2:30pm – 6:30pm, Thursday 5:45am -11:30am, and Friday 5:30am – 12:00pm; Non-standard and/or non-standard work week
Required Certifications/Licenses
Candidates must have the following valid and current certifications/licenses (must be valid at the time the posting closes) and these must be attached with your application.
• Lifesaving Society Swim for Life Instructor Certification
• National Lifeguard Pool Certification
• Standard First Aid, AED, and CPR Level ‘C’ Certification
• Must be a minimum of 16 years of age
• National Lifeguard Waterpark Certification (this certification will be required April 1, 2025, and applications without a valid National Lifeguard Waterpark certificate will be accepted at this time)
