Job Description: |
The City of Abbotsford’s Environmental Services Division is looking for a seasoned and passionate sustainability and climate action professional with proven skills and experience to join our growing team as the Senior Energy & Climate Action Specialist. This is a two-year term opportunity, with the possibility to extend or become a permanent position.
Reporting to the Senior Energy & Climate Action Manager, the Senior Energy & Climate Action Specialist acts as a subject matter expert on community-facing climate action topics to support the City in achieving its mitigation and adaptation goals. With an emphasis on planning, implementing, messaging, monitoring and reporting on initiatives and policy addressing building energy and carbon emissions, you will work closely with cross-departmental staff teams, community members, industry, and utility partners. Guided by Council’s Strategic Plan and Official Community Plan you will lead the design and implementation of community energy programs, coordinate engagement and education initiatives, advance BC Energy/Zero Carbon Step Code adoption, and identify and develop policy to improve energy efficiency and reduce GHG emissions citywide. Additional responsibilities include researching industry and sector trends and best practices, participating in peer networks, and supporting projects and initiatives that have climate impacts.
As the successful candidate, your advanced technical skills in business case development and analysis, project management and problem-solving are complemented by demonstrated ability in leadership, stakeholder engagement, verbal and written communications, and relationship building. Your strengths lie in designing effective plans, policies and processes, and your ability to lead and manage a variety of projects and programs while directing consultants and collaborating with team members.
You possess extensive knowledge of current energy and climate change mitigation, adaptation and resilience programs, policies and strategies relevant at various levels of government, such as CleanBC, and BC Energy/Zero Carbon Step Code along with considerable knowledge of local government processes and bylaws.

Educational Requirements: |
As the ideal candidate, you possess the following:
• A bachelor’s degree in energy management, sustainability, climate action, building engineering, resource and environmental management, applied science, or a related professional field.
• A minimum of five years’ directly related experience including comprehensive research and analysis, project management, and preferably in a local government or public sector environment.
• An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Salary: |
This position is unionized, CUPE Local 774, and the hourly rate of pay is from $47.10 – $55.38 |
