Job Description: Are you passionate about ceramics? Can you demonstrate that you have the knowledge and techniques necessary for ceramics studio management? Surrey Art Gallery is seeking an experienced Ceramic Studio Operator for the everyday maintenance of the ceramic???s studio at one of Canada???s most vibrant visual arts institutions. Our ceramics studio has 14 electric wheels, 1 kick wheel, 3 kilns, and several other pieces of studio equipment. We are seeking an individual who enjoys working in a dynamic environment and keeping a studio well organized and safe.
Duties: ??? Maintaining everyday operation of the Surrey Art Gallery ceramics studio, including making glazes, operating kilns, ordering and processing ceramic supply shipments and general studio equipment maintenance (keeping area and equipment safe, clean, hazard-free).
??? Providing technical recommendations in ceramic arts programs and firings as required.
??? Demonstrating knowledge of the technical aspects of the ceramic arts discipline including methods, practices, techniques, materials, tools, and equipment used in the operation and administration of a ceramic arts operation.
The successful candidate will be a detail-oriented individual with demonstrated knowledge of ceramic kiln facilities as well as related hazards and safety precautions; good oral and written communication skills; solid administrative, organizational, and interpersonal skills; effective problem-solving skills; and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team. This position is approximately 4-12 hours per week (based on number of seasonal courses running, with weeks off between sessions).
Skill Requirements: ??? The successful candidate will have post-secondary education in a related field
??? Two years related experiencing including supervision in cultural work or area of specialty
??? Emergency First Aid with CPR certification or acceptable equivalent
??? Physical coordination and stamina necessary to carry out the duties of the role
