Job Description: Employees in this position perform a variety of accounting and customer service functions following prescribed policies and procedures based on standard accounting practices.

While some independence of judgement is authorized for the performance of tasks within established guidelines, more complex or unusual situations are reviewed with the supervisor to determine the appropriate action.
Duties: Complete all tasks related to processing transactions and reconciling subsidiary ledgers, outstanding balances and accounts in accounts payable and accounts receivable, including verifying documents for coding, authorization and validity; performing data entry; processing electronic fund transactions, payments and adjustments; and maintaining related files and records.

Prepare and post journal entries.

Assist with the administration of general ledger and sub ledger accounts including reconciliations.

Prepare, maintain and reconcile a variety of reports, schedules and support documents.

Prepare related correspondence as required.

Assist with the administration of a procurement card system.

As required, post payments, process property taxes and perform cashiering duties.

Assist with planning of assigned activities in accordance with required schedules and departmental priorities.

Provide information, advice and assistance to municipal staff, external agencies and the public in a manner that is tactful, clear and concise.

Perform the duties of the Accounting Clerk I as required.

Provide training in functions related to the position, as required.

Provide information related to the performance assessment of new staff, or staff newly functioning in the Finance department.

Participate in the development and implementation of new policies and procedures.

As required assist other staff in the department.
Educational Requirements: High School graduation or equivalent, supplemented by completion of a recognized Certificate in an Accounting discipline.

Minimum of two years’ experience in a demanding financial office environment including experience in accounts receivable and payable, subsidiary ledgers, account reconciliation and analysis up to and including trial balance level, using financial computer software applications; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Skill Requirements: Considerable knowledge of spread sheeting.

Considerable knowledge of the principles, procedures, policies and regulations applicable to professional accounting practices.

Ability to prepare, verify and analyze a variety of financial and statistical reports and data.

Ability to maintain sustained attention to detail with high degrees of accuracy.

Ability to prioritize and balance a variety of assigned tasks and complex procedures to meet required schedules.

Ability to be courteous and tactful in a variety of demanding and difficult situations.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external contacts and to communicate tactfully and effectively, both verbally and in writing.
Salary: $30.97 per hour
Additional Information: The part-time schedule fluctuates over the year from working two, four-hour shifts per week to working full-time June through August on a nine-day fortnight (subject to change based on operational requirements).
