The Township of Langley is currently recruiting for a regular part-time Recreation Worker IV ??? Lifeguard/Instructor to join our team of professionals in the Parks and Recreation Division; Recreation Programs and Services Department. The focus of this position is to provide lifeguarding functions as well as instructional duties for a variety of aquatic programs.

Reporting to the Recreation Manager, you will be responsible in this unionized position for performing lifeguarding duties, ensuring the safety of patrons utilizing the aquatic facility and supervising the use of the swimming and related recreation areas. You will perform as head guard during absence of head guard depending upon seniority; perform custodial and janitorial duties, as well as schedule maintenance tasks with respect to pool water, facilities and equipment such as filters.

Your education will include completion of Grade 10, preferably completion of Grade 12 and Pool Operator's and/or Lifesaving Society Instructor courses; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Sound knowledge of the theory and practice of lifesaving, artificial respiration and first aid; working knowledge of teaching methods and group leadership techniques emphasizing instruction in water and safety and aquatic skills; and a working knowledge of pool chemistry, of water filtration, chlorination, heating and related pool equipment and procedures is necessary. You will also have the ability to establish sound aquatic skills and to instruct in these skills at the standards set by relevant authorities; and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with officials, employees and patrons. Qualified, short-listed candidates will undergo a practical assessment of their skills.

This position is defined by the Township of Langley as a position of trust (Child Safety) and requires a police information check prior to employment start date.

The rate of pay for this CUPE position is $22.53 - $26.38 per hour (5 steps, 2017 rates); $22.98 - $26.91 per hour (5 steps, 2018 rates) plus benefits. The hours of work are Tuesday and Thursday 12:00pm ??? 7:30pm, Wednesday 5:45am ??? 1:00pm, Saturday 6:15am ??? 1:00pm ; non-standard hours and/or non-standard work week.
