Legal Articling Student
Exempt, Full Time

We have a unique and exciting career opportunity for a law school graduate to obtain exposure and practical experience within a broad range of legal and policy issues affecting the City of Abbotsford.
As an articling student, you will report to and support the Director of Property, Risk Management & Legal Services in advising the City in areas including litigation, municipal, real property, commercial, planning, procurement, bylaw enforcement, insurance, risk management, contracts, and administrative law. You will also have primary responsibility for the day to day management of liability claims involving the City.
You will have the ability work well with a diverse team of professionals, as well as strong communication, research, problem-solving and interpersonal skills allowing you to build credible and trusted relationships with your team and throughout the organization. In addition to your pre-law undergraduate studies in any discipline, you have completed (or will have completed by May 2018) a Bachelor of Laws or Juris Doctor degree from a Canadian common law school or a certificate of qualification from the National Committee on Accreditation.
As a Legal Articling Student, you will have carriage of appropriate files and perform tasks including:
• assisting in the representation of the City before various levels of courts and tribunals;
• preparation of pleadings, affidavits, facta, contracts, policies, reports and correspondence;
• conducting legal research on a wide variety of issues and drafting legal memoranda;
• reviewing current and draft legislation, bylaws, and policies; and
• closing real estate transactions.
